Reactions of 4-arylazo-1-naphthols with mercaptocarboxylic acids gave naphtho[2, 1-b]-3H-1, 4-thiazin-2(1H)-one derivatives in moderate yields. The structures were determined on the basis of spectral evidence and chemical transformation. The reaction proceeded via Michael addition of mercaptocarboxylic acid to arylazonaphthol, followed by dehydrative cyclization. |
