n-alkyl, dimethyl, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl ammonium chlorides having an alkyl group of different chain lengths were synthesized through the reaction of n-alkyl, dimethylamine hydrochlorides with epichlorohydrin, and used for the cationization of cellulosic fiber. The amount of ammonium chloride in the cationized fibers was estimated from the saturation value of the acid dye using Langmuir's equation. Antibacterial activity of the cationized fiber was studied for the effects of the alkyl chain lengths on the ammonium cation. |
