| 内容記述 | This study examines the expansion of word classes and orthographic forms in Japanese abbreviated compounds (ryakujukugo), focusing on the conditions under which such compounds are generated and stabilized. Traditionally, these compounds have been regarded as consisting primarily of Sino-Japanese (kanjibased) words, subject to strict structural and phonological constraints. However, contemporary linguistic usage reveals an increasing number of abbreviated forms that incorporate non-kanji elements such as loanwords, native Japanese vocabulary, and even symbolic characters such as “・” or “&.” An analysis of established and semi-established forms shows that such abbreviations are not strictly determined by word class. Instead, their creation is governed by semantic compatibility, frequency of use, and pragmatic necessity. Symbolic characters often function as transitional markers in the early stages of abbreviation, aiding recognition and disambiguation; however, they tend to disappear as the expressions become lexicalized. The findings suggest that Japanese abbreviated compounds emerge through a dynamic interplay of linguistic economy, cognitive processing, and social context, challenging the conventional assumption that their structure is rigid and confined to kanji compounds. |
