In the present study we researched actual activities, performed over three years, relating to sports training for disabled persons in order to obtain the qualification of "Sports Trainer of the Disabled: Intermediate Sports Trainer," and it is our hope that these findings will aid future student instruction. To acquire the qualification, one must obtain credits in predetermined lecture didactics and have at least 120 hours (15 days) training experience over three years. The 24 persons followed for this study graduated in March 2004. (1) The average time spent in activities relating to the sports training of disabled persons over three years was 21.2±9.57 days. The most number of days spent in such activities was 54 days, the fewest was 15 days. (2) We divided the actual activities performed over three years as sports training for disabled persons into seven activity items. All 24 persons participated in sports-related support of disabled persons, 20 persons participated in practical training or caregiving experience and training at schools for the physically and mentally disabled, 15 persons participated in activities for supporting disabled persons, and a number of persons were active in fitness and sports practical training, sports activity support, educational training, and personal sports activity support. (3) With regard to the sports-related support of disabled persons, most of the activities involved the use of sports facilities or institutions for disabled persons. Swimming-related activities were common. With regard to activities for supporting disabled persons, many of the activities were at schools for the physically and mentally disabled. Some activities were performed in welfare centers for disabled persons. (4) Prior studies have reported that practical training or caregiving experience and training at schools for the physically and mentally disabled is "beneficial experience while a student." This experience also may become the impetus for some to obtain the qualification. The data of the current study also show that many students had practical training or caregiving experience and training at schools for the physically and mentally disabled, and this will likely continue in the future. We therefore feel that it is necessary to continue the current practice of "including a maximum of seven days among the activities performed as sports training for disabled persons" in the future. (5) Many of the training activities require students to provide a large amount of information to sports facilities or institutions for disabled persons and welfare centers and institutions for disabled persons. It is important that students start on this as early as possible. To achieve this, it is crucial that there is sufficient content to the "Disabled Persons Sports Volunteer Information," which was started in 2004, and this will likely become a future topic. |
